Sara Becker鈥檚 WESTbound Experience Becomes Mission to Inspire Students

Finding Her Purpose
When Sara Becker first stepped onto 麻豆社区鈥檚 campus, she had two big passions: biology and making a difference.
Today, as a Biology and Secondary Education major and a proud WESTbound Success Scholar, she鈥檚 turning those passions into a career that will impact countless students.
鈥淚鈥檝e always loved how biology explains the world around us,鈥� Becker said. 鈥淏ut I didn鈥檛 just want to study it 鈥� I wanted to do something meaningful with that knowledge.鈥� For her, that meant teaching. 鈥淪cience is one of those subjects that a lot of students feel intimidated by. They think they 鈥榗an鈥檛鈥� do it. I want to change that. I want to help students see they can succeed, and maybe, even learn to love it.鈥�
The Role of WESTbound Success
Becker had already been considering teaching before she learned about the WESTbound Success Scholarship, but the program sealed the deal. 鈥淚 was pretty set on teaching, but WESTbound was the last push that made me certain,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t opened my eyes to the especially high need for STEM teachers. That really motivated me.鈥�
Through WESTbound Success, Becker gained more than financial support 鈥� she鈥檚 found mentorship and hands-on experience that will shape her future classroom. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited to learn from mentors who have been in my shoes,鈥� she said. 鈥淭he program offers so many chances to grow, not just as teachers, but as leaders in STEM education.鈥�
Teaching Where It Matters Most
For Sara, teaching in a high-needs school means more than delivering lessons. It鈥檚 about being a consistent source of support and encouragement for students who need it most. 鈥淭o me, it means making sure every student has a fair chance to learn and succeed, even when things are tough,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 want to be the kind of teacher who doesn鈥檛 just tell students they鈥檙e capable 鈥� I want to show them.鈥�
Advice for Future Educators
Her advice to other students considering this path? 鈥淛ust try it out,鈥� she said. 鈥淵ou might be surprised by how much you love it. If you enjoy connecting with people and want to do something that counts, teaching is definitely worth it.鈥�
